Pilgrimage & Thorns

In religion and spirituality, a pilgrimage is a long journey or search of great moral significance. Sometimes, it is a journey to a shrine of importance to a person’s beliefs and faith. Members of many major religions participate in pilgrimages. A person who makes such a journey is called a pilgrim. – Wikipedia
For those of you who have been reading this blog for a while and those who are just catching up, you might be wondering why the name “A Pilgrims Confession“? Why is Daniel a pilgrim, and what is he confessing? Isn’t that what Catholics do? I am still firmly a Baptist though I will admit that Eastern Orthodoxy has some interesting points that I believe that many Christians should consider. No actually my inspiration comes from, Hebrews 11,
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. Hebrews 11:13-16 KJV (Emphasis Mine)
Having grown up in the high shrub steppe of south eastern Washington, one becomes intimately aware of the need for water and the consequences of not having it. Crops and livestock will die. You will be following them soon after. Walking with God is not unlike this experience in many ways; without a living and active relationship with the creator of the universe, you dead. Many people make pilgrimages to specific sites of significance but God calls us on a pilgrimage to himself.
The reality is that life though is not easy, neither is the rigors of the Christianity. My hope and prayer is that this journal might in a sense be journal of sorts detailing the sights, smells, and tastes of the Christian walk. Honestly its not easy and I am no shining example in my own self. God has a thing for using thorns (or in our our case it seems goat heads) to encourage our faith to be put into action, and trust him with everything as we patiently learn of His plan for us. I am sure you can probably the spot the thorns through a number of my posts as of late.
This need not be a discouragement, its just me saying “Ouch.” How has God been keeping you humble lately?
